Glossary

 

Positions:

Goalkeeper – The only player that can use their hands during the game to protect their goal.

Defense – Players that play right in front of the goalkeeper and stop their opponent from getting to their goal.

Midfielders – They are positioned in the middle of the field and they help out both the forwards and the defense to score a goal and to keep their opponent from scoring.

Center Midfielder – A player(s) that controls the whole middle of the field. They have the same duties as the midfielder that play on the wings.

Forward – They play the closest to their opponent’s goal. Their job is to score goals while they are the closest.

Sweeper – Some coaches like to set up with sweepers. They are the player that stands right in front of the goalkeeper to just kick out all the soccer balls and the one to stop their opponent from scoring a goal.

Soccer Positions

Terms:

Box – The ball is inside the goalie’s area

  • 18 yard box – big box
  • 6 yard box – small box

Clear – To kick or do everything you can to kick the ball out of bounce or to get it on the opposite side of the field

Dead ball- When the ball is stopped and it is not moving… Usually dead when it is being set up for a free kick or penalty kick

Goal – When the ball goes into the net during a fair play

Mark – cover your opponent that is near you and make sure they do not get the ball or score a goal

Head – hit the ball with your head

Offside – If you are on the opponent’s side of the field passing the defense line you are offside

Own Goal – When you score on your own goal

Penalty – When there is a foul in the goalies box the opponent gets a chance to score without anyone blocking their shot. It is just you and the goalie.
